Phase 1: 48-Hour “Jar” Test

This is the high-precision method. Follow the steps, let the jar settle, then return here to enter measurements.

Jar Test Instructions:

  1. Fill a straight-sided jar about 1/3 full with soil.
  2. Add water until almost full. Add 1 teaspoon of dish soap.
  3. Shake vigorously for 5 minutes.
  4. Let settle: Sand settles in 1 minute. Silt settles in 2–4 hours.
  5. Wait 24–48 hours for clay to settle and water to clear.
  6. Measure the height of all three layers.
