Why are these tools free?
We believe every homeowner should be able to get expert results without spending any money. Our tools empower you to understand your yard on your own, so you don’t always have to pay for expensive professional lab tests to see what is happening in your soil.
Does the Soil Profile Builder require me to pay for tests?
No. While a paid pH test from a lab gives the most exact numbers, you can actually check your soil’s health using simple items from your kitchen. By using things like vinegar and baking soda, you can get a good idea of what your soil needs for free.
Do the MFY tools use AI?
No. Our tools do not use AI to “guess” your results. Instead, they are powered by Hardcoded Logic based on real university research. This means if you put in the same information, you will always get the same solid answer. The rules only change when the official science for soil or grass changes.
Can I update my data in the Soil Profile or Turf Match tools?
Yes! Your yard is always changing, so your data should too. You can go back into your tools at any time to update your records as you improve your soil or decide to try a different type of grass.
Why should I use the Zone Finder if I already know my zone?
The USDA updated their map in late 2023, and many areas moved into new “subzones” (like moving from 7a to 7b). If you only know your main zone number, we recommend using our tool to find your exact subzone. Knowing your precise Hardiness Zone helps you pick plants that will actually survive the winter.
Can I use your tools on my website?
Not yet, but we are working on it! We will soon offer a “white label” feature. This will let you put our tools directly on your own website so your clients can find their own grass matches and soil profiles.

Where does MFY get its horticultural data?
We only use the best sources available. Our information comes from University Extension offices and peer-reviewed research. We translate this high-level science into simple steps that any homeowner can follow.
What is the difference between a Species and a Cultivar?
A Species is the general family of a plant, like “Tall Fescue.” A Cultivar is a special version of that plant that was grown to have specific traits, like staying greener during a drought or fighting off bugs better.
What if I can’t find a certain weed or disease in your list?
If you don’t see it yet, don’t worry! We are likely busy in the lab right now doing the research. We are constantly working to add more data to our Registries so that every homeowner can access the information they need.

How can I report a discrepancy in the botanical data?
