Mulch helps against kikuyugrass seedlings but won’t stop an established stand. A 3-to-4-inch settled layer of organic mulch shades the soil and blocks seed germination, which is real prevention in a clean bed. But an established plant sprouting from those energy-loaded rhizomes has no trouble pushing straight up through even a thick mulch layer — the shoots simply grow through it. For physical suppression of an existing stand you’d need a heavy, meticulously overlapped woven landscape fabric under a thin mulch cap, and even that is imperfect: runners creep under the edges and through any gap or tear. Mulch is a seedling barrier, not a solution to runners already in the ground.
