- Fall pre-emergent vs. overseeding. A pre-emergent that stops annual bluegrass seed also stops your desirable grass seed. If you’re overseeding — cool-season renovation, or ryegrass over dormant bermuda for winter color — you can’t do both at once. Either skip the pre-emergent on seeded areas and lean on dense seeding, then apply a light pre-emergent only after the new grass has been mowed twice; or, for ryegrass overseeding, seed first and clean up with a selective post-emergent once the ryegrass is established.
