What Makes It Different
AU Centennial is the dwarf. Auburn University released it in 1983 from a single plant selected out of gamma-irradiated common centipedegrass seed — a deliberate mutation, increased vegetatively ever since.
What the mutation bought is density. It grows lower and tighter than common centipedegrass, with better color and seedheads inconspicuous enough that they stop being a feature of the lawn. The result reads manicured where ordinary centipedegrass reads loose and open. It is also sterile, which is both why the seedheads are unobtrusive and why you will never find it as seed.
Extension records credit it with two smaller gains as well: improved low-temperature tolerance, and somewhat better performance on higher-pH soil than either common centipedegrass or Oaklawn. Treat that second one carefully. Clemson’s wording is that it does “a little better” on alkaline soils, and centipedegrass as a species is still ruled out above pH 6.5. It is a narrow margin, not a different grass.
Why is there only one dwarf? The species carries a famously narrow gene base, traced to a single introduction in 1916, so useful variation is scarce and a dwarf had to be induced with radiation rather than found. That is also why the improved-cultivar list for centipedegrass stays short while bermuda and zoysia have dozens.
Who It’s For
The Gulf South, where it is still produced: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. The yard is the same acidic, sunny, low-traffic site the species always wants. What changes is the buyer — someone who wants the tidiest version of this grass and will pay for vegetative establishment to get it.
One deferral: if you are in central or south Florida, Hammock is finer still — its leaves measured about 14% shorter than AU Centennial’s in the release trial — and it is bred for that climate. Start on the subtropical page instead.

What Changes In Care
Feeding, watering, and the acid-soil requirement are identical to the parent page. Two adjustments and one trap.
- Mow at the low end, not below it. The parent range of 1 to 2 inches still applies, and a dwarf lawn shows its density best near the bottom of it. But the 1-inch floor is not negotiable just because the grass is short: the stolons still run across the soil surface, there are still no rhizomes underneath, and scalping them thins a canopy that fills back in slowly. A standard rotary mower is all this needs — it is a semidwarf lawn grass, not a greens type.
- Density means thatch. A tighter canopy accumulates thatch faster once it is over-fed or over-watered, and thatch is one of the drivers of centipedegrass decline. Same rules as the parent: act only past about half an inch, in late May or early June, in one direction only.
- Vegetative establishment changes the herbicide timing. Put no pre-emergent down until the sod or plugs have rooted and the turf resists a gentle tug, then start at half the labeled rate.
Before You Buy
- There is no such thing as Centennial seed. The cultivar is sterile. A bag claiming otherwise is common centipedegrass with a borrowed name.
- Supply is the real constraint, not price. Alabama Extension lists TifBlair as the only improved centipedegrass readily available in Alabama — notable, since Auburn released this cultivar. Call growers and confirm current inventory before you design a yard around it.
- Price the whole lawn. Sod at $3.00–$4.00 per square yard is a modest premium per yard but a large one per lawn, because there is no seeded route. Sodding 5,000 square feet runs into four figures where seeding certified TifBlair is well under $200.
- The pH edge does not lift the exclusion. Soil at 6.5 or above still rules centipedegrass out, along with heavy traffic, under about six hours of sun, and salt exposure. Suppliers sometimes describe this cultivar as highly alkaline-tolerant; the university record says slightly better than common, which is a different claim.
- If you cannot find it, certified TifBlair sod is the honest fallback. You give up the dwarf density and gain real availability, a lower price, and the option to seed.
