What Makes It Different
This is the only group where a drought does not turn the lawn brown.
Ordinary bermuda survives dry spells by going dormant. It pulls resources down into its rhizomes, drops its color, and waits. Healthy turf lasts three to six weeks like that and greens back up within days of water returning. That is genuine survival, and it is a large part of why bermuda has its reputation for toughness. But it is survival, not performance — your lawn is straw-colored the whole time.
TifTuf works differently. It closes its stomata — the leaf pores it loses water through — earlier in response to heat, and roots deeply enough to keep drawing on subsoil moisture. So it keeps going on less water instead of shutting down. In UGA trials it used 38% less water than Tifway while holding better turf quality, and retained far more green leaf tissue under drought stress. That mechanism, rather than simply a higher tolerance score, is what this group is.
Who It Is For
Yards under standing watering restrictions. Sandy soils that drain before the grass can use the water. Any lawn where irrigation is metered and the bill is the constraint — the low-desert Southwest above all, where a bermuda lawn is otherwise the best-adapted choice available.
It also suits anyone who simply does not want a brown lawn in high summer. If you are drawn to bermuda for the toughness but the dormant look would bother you, this is the group that resolves that.
One honest limit on the guidance below. Relative comparisons between cultivars are well documented. Actual volumetric figures — inches per week — are published only for the arid Southwest, roughly 2.4 inches a month in February climbing to about 6.7 in July. East of the Plains no equivalent published number exists, so treat this group as ranked rather than quantified there. You will be watching the grass, not a chart.

What Changes In Care
The whole point is that you water less — but only once the lawn is established. During grow-in these need exactly the same treatment as any other bermuda: light watering three or four times a day for the first seven to ten days, then tapering to deep and infrequent. Drought tolerance is a property of a rooted lawn, not a new one, and this is the single most common way people lose an expensive install.
After that, water deeply and infrequently. Wet the soil to about six inches — check with a screwdriver — then wait. In the Southeast, UGA’s guidance on TifTuf goes further than the usual advice: once established in decent soil it often needs no irrigation at all outside extreme drought, which is a real departure from the one-inch-a-week rule of thumb. In the arid Southwest the published monthly figures still apply.
Do not cut fertilizer to save water. A thin, underfed lawn is less water-efficient, not more, because it roots shallowly and loses more to evaporation off bare soil between plants. Feed these on the normal hybrid schedule.
Mowing and mower are unchanged: a sharp rotary at 1 to 1.5 inches, and a reel only if you are going below an inch.
Before You Buy
- There is no seeded route into this group. All four are sterile hybrids, sold as sod, sprigs or plugs. A bag labeled “drought-tolerant bermuda seed” is a seeded common type, which handles drought by going dormant and browning out — the exact thing you are paying to avoid.
- Buy certified, from a licensed producer. All four are patented and licensed. “TifTuf-type” or unnamed drought bermuda sod is not TifTuf, and once it is laid you have no way to verify what you bought.
- Check Coachella and Presidio availability before you design around them. Both are Southern California through West Coast Turf, with homeowner supply still ramping. Presidio in particular is a specialty order.
- Zone claims on sod-farm pages are vendor statements. TifTuf being described as good into Zone 6b is a grower claim, not trial data. If winter is your real constraint rather than water, use the cold-hardy page — and note that Tahoma 31 appears on both.
- Check your water district’s rebates first. Some pay for removing lawn rather than replacing it, which can change the math on a premium sod install before you have spent anything.
